SDS or Self Direct System is perfect for drilling into hard materials due to the shank design and drill type. The grooves of the shank sit into the chuck securing it into position but still allowing the SDS drill bit to slide up and down as the drill hammers up and down. 

They are designed solely for use with SDS Plus machines, they are not compatible with the larger SDS Max machines unless used in conjunction with an adaptor.
